Education

Admitted to the Paris Bar since 1991, Reinhard Dammann holds a Master’s degree (1985) and a DESS in business law(1986) and is a graduate of the Institut d’Etudes Politiques d’Aix-Marseille III (1985). In 1990, he obtained a doctorate in German civil law from the prestigious Ludwig Maximilian University in Munich, after having worked with the eminent Professor Hans-Jürgen Sonnenberger at the Institute of Comparative and Private International Law.

Reinhard Dammann is trilingual in French, English and German.

Teaching

For the past 20 years, Reinhard Dammann has been teaching at Sciences Po Paris and, since 2017 as associated professor at the Sciences Po Law School. He lectures for more than 15 years at the Sorbonne University Law School.

Area of expertise

His expertise is recognized in the field of insolvency law, national and cross-border restructuring. He also advises international groups of companies in international litigation and ICC arbitration cases. He intervenes as an expert witness before UK and US courts, as well as before arbitral tribunals.

International Organisations

Reinhard Dammann is a member of the Committee of Experts to the European Commission for the new “Insolvency” Regulation of May 20, 2015 and the “Insolvency and Restructuring” Directive of June 20, 2019, and actively participated in the drafting of these founding instruments.

He is also a member of the Committee of Experts to the European Commission for the harmonization of material insolvency law.

He is advising the World Bank on insolvency reforms in Vietnam, Egypt, Ethiopia, Mongolia and Lebanon.

He represents for more fifteen years the Foundation for Continental Law at the United Nations UNCITRAL working group V sessions in New York and Vienna on the drafting of model laws on cross-border insolvency proceedings. At the session that took place in December 2022, Reinhard Dammann acted on behalf of the French Republic.

Publications & Books

Reinhard Dammann is the author of more than 250 articles and publications in France, Germany and United Kingdom.

Together with Professor Hans-Jürgen Sonnenberger, he has written a German-language reference manual on French commercial law (2008).

He participated in the drafting of two commentaries on European Insolvency Regulation, published in Berlin in 2007 and at Oxford University Press (OUP) second edition in 2022 (the third edition is in preparation).

Also, in 2018, he published “Le droit de l’insolvabilité internationale” (Lextenso) the second edition of which is in preparation.

Together with Professor Christoph Paulus he is co-author of a commentary on the Restructuring and Insolvency Directive (EU) 2019/1023.

He publishes in the Commentary of Munich the report on French Insolvency Law (paper version, the new 4^th edition in German and English is in preparation and on-line version, 2025).

Reinhard Dammann founded the law firm DAMMANN at 17bis Avenue Foch in Paris 16, after having headed the restructuring department of the law firm Clifford Chance for 12 years. Previously, he was a partner at White & Case, which he joined in 1989.
